The Krispy Kreme Challenge is an NC State staple that is all about getting uncomfortable, perfect for the Discomfort Club. The race consists of five miles, consuming 12 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts all under one hour.
At first, this race seemed like a great idea and members of the club decided to take on this fun challenge. It wasn't until we reached the 2.5-mile mark and arrived at Krispy Kreme that we realized how intense and difficult this was going to be. All around us contestants were stacking, smashing, and doing anything in their power (including soaking them in water) to get those dozen down.
With this intimidating sight in mind, we grabbed our dozen doughnuts each, took a deep breath, and got down to business. It seemed like the stack and squish method was working so I decided to give it a try. After two stacks of three and the most chewing I've ever done in my life I was halfway through the doughnuts but I was hurting.
I felt like I had hit a wall and that everything was about to go downhill. I started breaking each Doughnut into smaller pieces, and soon the inevitable happened; I felt less full as the contents of my stomach were shot out onto the cold asphalt. While this may sound harsh this is exactly what I needed to move on to the next phase of the race.
I quickly finished up the rest of the doughnuts and shot off in a sprint determined to complete the challenge in under an hour. The doughnuts gave me the sugar high necessary to kick it into high gear and cross that finish line. Unfortunately, my lack of preparation and doughnut-eating technique failed me in reaching my goal. I finished the race in one hour and four minutes.
Completing this challenge would not have been possible without the other members of the Discomfort Club that participated. Pictured above is our shot at the finish line: Gabe (left) Tyler (right).
